How To Get A New Routine For Your Dog During Quarantine

  04/09/2020 at 18:35 pm

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has brought about a lot of changes around the globe. Pet parents have been dealing with a myriad of changes as well. Changes in routine from going into an office to working from home to just staying home and not working during the COVID-19 Quarantine. If you are among the pet parents who are now staying home -- whether you're working or not -- your change in routine is has likely brought a change in routine for your dog. Disruption of your dog's routine could lead to stress, anxiety and to your dog misbehaving while he adjusts to what is being called "the new normal."

What can you do to help your dog adjust to your being home all day when he was accustomed to being home alone? We have some ways to make his transition smoother and to help you find ways in which to enjoy the time home with your pup while trying to get your work done.

How To Set Up A Routine For You & Your Dog During The Coronavirus Quarantine

We have some tips to help both you and your dog get into a new routine. Some dogs who get their schedules disrupted will chew shoes, bark or otherwise act out. If you're trying to get work done or talk on the phone with colleagues and clients, you certainly don't want Fluffy or Fido barking during the entire call, right? We do know that employers and colleagues and clients are very understanding of those employees who may now be working from home at the kitchen table!

  • Get up at a set time. Our dogs' body clocks are accustomed to going out and visiting Mother Nature at specific times of the day. Try to stick to a routine so your dog doesn't make any messes in the house. Even if you don't need to get up at the same time every day that you used to, get up at a time that is consistent.
  • Don't give your dog a lot of snacks. It may be tempting -- for you -- to be grazing the refrigerator and cupboards because you're bored or because you have access to them that you didn't have when you were at work. Resist the urge to give your dog snacks or if you do, feed her snacks that are healthy. Give fruits and veggies and healthy dog treats.
  • Get up and get out. Take advantage of this time working from home, or not working at all because of COVID-19 to set up healthy routines for you and your dog. Get up and take a walk. Set a timer to remind you to get up and get moving at least once every few hours. You don't want to go to the dog park and you don't want to be surrounded by others during this time of social distancing, but in the great outdoors, chances are you can take a walk, hike or run and not encounter people of if you do, you just give them a wide berth. If you have to get on the phone or a video chat with colleagues or clients, a tired pup is one who will sleep, and not bark, while you're on the phone!
  • Snuggle time. When you find yourself feeling stressed by the situation or by what you're hearing on the news, just get away from it all and snuggle with your pup. Turn on your favorite movie, turn off social media and the radio and news and just enjoy a flick and snuggle time with your dog. Remember, this is a BIG deal for them to have you around so much and they crave your company -- give them what they want while you can.
  • Ease them back into it. When the quarantine is over and you are going back to work, ease your dog back into the old routine. Remember, the disruption in your being home, then going back to not being home can cause anxiety and stress in your dog. Get them ready for the transition when it comes so he is ready for the changes again.

Your pet can sense your stress and anxiety and may act out because of it. Your pet can also help alleviate your stress. It's a fact that petting your dog can lower your blood pressure, so why not give your dog a belly rub and relax and enjoy one another.
